Prototypes of the upgraded Tesla Model S Plaid and Model Y Performance were recorded on the Nurburgring highway. Test cars, hidden under a dense disguise, were caught in the lenses of photographers and were published by Autocar. Despite the camouflage, the images show a number of updated design elements and aerodynamics.
The Model S shows off a redesigned front bumper and grille, which were introduced during the last update at the beginning of the year. The prototype has larger air intakes, made in a more aggressive style, which indicates work on improving cooling and aerodynamics. The Model Y features a new solid LED strip on the front and an elongated spoiler designed to minimize air resistance. The body shape of the crossover has become more streamlined.
The technical characteristics of the upgraded Tesla models have not yet been officially disclosed. According to Autocar analysts, the Model S Plaid can get an 800-volt architecture, similar to that used in the Cybertruck, which will significantly increase the charging speed. The tested Model S Plaid is expected to retain the 1,020-hp three-engine powertrain, which delivers acceleration to 96 km / h in less than 2.1 seconds, according to a number of independent tests.
Model Y Performance, according to preliminary data, will retain the two-engine all-wheel drive scheme, while it will be equipped with a number of improvements. These include an updated interior with premium finishing materials, improved sound insulation and redesigned seats for increased comfort.
Tesla's plans to release the updated Model S Plaid and Model Y Performance are associated with increasing competition in the segment of high-performance electric vehicles. Previously, the Model S Plaid held the lap record for mass-produced electric cars on the North Loop of the Nurburgring, but in 2023 it was surpassed by the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, and in 2024-the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, which even surpassed the Rimac Nevera.
The launch of the updated models should strengthen Tesla's position in the premium segment of electric vehicles and regain lost records. The Model Y Performance will compete with the likes of the Porsche Macan Turbo Electric, Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Smart #5 Brabus. The official debut of the updated models is expected in the coming months.
