At the annual developer conference WWDC 2025, Apple introduced several changes that will affect all devices in its ecosystem-from iPhone and Mac to Apple Vision Pro. The presentation focused on unification, privacy, and the interface revolution.
The first announcement is the transition to a new operating system numbering system. All Apple platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS, will now follow the annual version format. For example, the next version of macOS will not be called macOS 15 or 19, but macOS 26-according to the calendar year. This step will simplify synchronization between platforms and bring the company closer to the approaches already used by Samsung and Microsoft. Apple emphasizes that the new system reflects the regularity and predictability of updates for users and developers.
The second major announcement was Live Translation technology — a function for instant translation of voice calls, video calls and messages without an Internet connection. All processes take place locally, thanks to integration with the new Apple Intelligence platform, which guarantees the protection of user data. In FaceTime mode, the system displays translated subtitles in real time, and during phone calls, automatic two-way translation occurs even when communicating with Android devices. In messages, the text is translated during typing. Developers already have access to an API that allows them to integrate the technology into third-party applications. The full list of supported languages has not yet been published, which may be a barrier at an early stage of implementation.
The third update was a new interface design called "Liquid Glass" — the first large-scale redesign of the visual style since the introduction of iOS 7 in 2013. The new style emphasizes transparency, smoothness and minimalism, providing an intuitive interaction with the device. "Liquid glass" will be implemented on all platforms - from smartphones to mixed reality headsets. According to Apple, the updated interface reflects not only technological progress, but also the desire for aesthetics that match the future of mobile devices.
All announced changes will be implemented by the end of 2025. Apple has already outlined the priorities of the new strategy: visual updating, ecosystem unification, local data processing and expanding the capabilities of artificial intelligence. Experts note that the set of solutions presented is not just cosmetic changes, but a strategic step by Apple in the face of increasing competition from Android platforms and Chinese technology giants.
