USA: Google will restrict the installation of. apk files on Android

Google has announced a major change in its Android app distribution policy. The company plans to ban the installation of. apk files from open sources, leaving users of certified devices the ability to download only applications from trusted developers. This move will be the most radical change in the Android ecosystem in recent years and will bring it closer to the more closed software management model typical of competitors.

For a long time, Android has been positioned as an open alternative to restricted access systems. The ability to freely download applications directly from the Internet allowed independent developers to distribute their products without the participation of official stores. However, the growth of cybersecurity threats and fraudster abuse has forced Google to rethink the model, focusing on verifying the identity of developers.

According to the plan, testing of the new system will begin in October 2025 in the early access format. By March 2026, all developers will have access to the updated console, where they will need to pass mandatory verification and confirm data, including application signing keys. Already in September 2026, the system will work in the pilot countries-Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. If the implementation is successful, the restriction will become global by 2027.

Verification will take place via the advanced Android Developer Console. To publish and distribute applications, you will need proof of identity and registration of technical data. If there is no verification, you will not be able to install the app on most certified devices, i.e. those that have Google Services pre-installed. At the same time, the corporation will not check the content or functionality of programs, limiting itself to confirming the authenticity of the developer.

Experts believe that the new system will change the balance in the mobile app market. On the one hand, this will create an additional barrier for independent studios and limit the flexibility of users. On the other hand, increasing the level of trust and reducing the risk of malware can strengthen Android's position in the enterprise segment and among users focused on security.
