The American video platform YouTube has launched an intelligent age control system in the United States, focused on improving the level of protection of underage users. The new mechanism works on the basis of machine learning algorithms and allows you to determine the approximate age of the viewer without relying on manually entered data in the profile, including cases of deliberate concealment of age.
The system analyzes behavioral patterns specific to different age categories, including the type of content viewed, session duration, and response to notifications. If the algorithm classifies the user as a minor, additional restrictions and digital security mechanisms are automatically activated.
Among the implemented restrictions are disabling personalized advertising, limiting the number of views of sensitive content related to eating disorders, aggression, or sleep disorders. Reminders are also activated to take a break and observe the rest mode. Previously, these tools only worked if the user explicitly specified their age, but now they are launched based on an algorithmic assessment.
The platform has also implemented an age verification mechanism. If the user does not agree with the system's assessment, they will be asked to confirm their age using one of the following methods: uploading an identity card, entering payment card data, or taking a selfie for biometric verification. Access to content marked as 18+ will only be granted after passing the verification process.
Testing of the new system will begin in the coming weeks among a limited number of American users. It is expected that in the future the technology will be scaled to other regions. The age rating algorithms will be part of YouTube's broader strategy to comply with international data protection standards for minors and prevent unauthorized access to potentially harmful content.
The initiative reflects current challenges in the digital environment, where the user's age is not always accurately determined. With the growing volume of user-generated video and a variety of topics, automated identification methods are becoming a critical element of platform information security and a tool for compliance with regulatory requirements.
