protecting teenagers on the internet
In the United States, strong measures are being taken to strengthen the digital security of teenagers. A major technology company has implemented a new policy to protect underage users on its platforms, as a result of which hundreds of thousands of accounts showing signs of predatory activity were deleted in the first half of 2025.
In June of this year, more than one million accounts were blocked after receiving security notifications. Teens also initiated more than a million complaints about suspicious users, using updated tools to block and send complaints in one click.
A key element of the new policy is increased control over personal messages and comments. All teen accounts and profiles representing children are now automatically switched to strict filters that limit contact with unfamiliar users and exclude offensive messages. This measure is aimed at reducing the risks of psychological and sexual pressure on minors.
Among the deleted ones are about 135 thousand accounts caught in the sexualization of children's content. There were cases when adult users who manage accounts representing children received inappropriate requests or comments. In addition, more than 500,000 linked profiles were identified that operated within the same network.
The company also announced the removal of 10 million fake accounts posing as popular authors. These measures are part of a strategy to combat aggressive spam and fake content that promotes misinformation and abuse.
Amid growing public pressure and multiple investigations by the authorities, including allegations of creating addictions in teenagers, the platform has been criticized for its lack of transparency and weak control mechanisms. In response, reforms were launched aimed at reducing the vulnerability of young users and improving the level of digital hygiene.
At the same time, the bill was reintroduced in the US Congress Kids Online Safety Actrequiring digital platforms to be responsible for protecting minors. The document requires companies to take proactive measures to minimize potential harm from their digital products.
The problem of sexual exploitation on the Internet is becoming more acute. In 2025 alone, the United States recorded an increase in cases of digital extortion among teenagers. According to experts, the development of the digital ecosystem should be accompanied not only by technological progress, but also by ethical standards, especially in relation to the most vulnerable groups of users.
