Uzbekistan invests in energy and logistics: new hydropower plants, thermal power plants and infrastructure projects

Uzbekistan continues to implement large-scale projects in the field of energy, industry and transport logistics, demonstrating a steady course towards the modernization of critical infrastructure. According to official information, new hydroelectric power stations will be built in four regions of the republic by the end of 2025. The projects will cover the Tashkent, Namangan, Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya regions, providing a total generation of up to 648 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

The development of hydropower is complemented by an active modernization of thermal generation. Two combined-cycle units with a total capacity of 1,065 megawatts are being built at the Talimarjan thermal power plant. A new 1,573-megawatt power plant is being built in the Syrdarya region. According to preliminary calculations, both facilities will be able to provide up to 20 billion kilowatt-hours of output per year. This will significantly increase the stability of the national energy system in the autumn-winter period and reduce the load on existing capacities.

Against the background of increasing energy demand from the industrial sector, Uzbekistan is also expanding international cooperation in the field of hydrocarbon production and processing. An agreement was reached with the state oil and Gas Company of Azerbaijan on joint exploration and development of fields in the Ustyurt region. In parallel, programs are being implemented with other countries to develop hard-to-reach fields, digitalize processes, and train qualified personnel for the oil and gas industry.

The strategic orientation of foreign economic policy is confirmed by Uzbekistan's participation in international infrastructure initiatives. In July 2025, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan signed an agreement on a feasibility study for the construction of the trans-Afghan railway along the Termez – Mazar-I – Sharif – Kabul-Peshawar route. The project aims to improve inter-regional transport links, reduce the cost of logistics, and contribute to restoring economic stability in Afghanistan.

An additional indicator of the growing investment attractiveness of Uzbekistan was the agreement with one of the leading German automakers to start car production in the country. The assembly of models will be organized on the basis of the enterprise Alyans Auto, which is part of the structure of Uzavtosanoat. The technological cycle will be implemented according to the scheme of large-node assembly using the logistics capacity of the manufacturer in China, which will significantly optimize the time and costs.

Consolidated efforts of the state in the direction of energy sovereignty, transport integration and industrialization of the economy create conditions for long-term growth and strengthening of national competitiveness. Uzbekistan continues to strengthen its position as a regional center of attraction for investment and strategic infrastructure initiatives.
