Uzbekistan launches national program "Safe Road"

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced the launch of the national program "Safe Road", the main goal of which will be to reduce the level of accidents on the country's roads. The initiative will be implemented through comprehensive modernization of road infrastructure and reform of existing mechanisms for ensuring traffic safety.

As part of the program, the Government of Uzbekistan will reorganize the Safe Road and Safe Pedestrian Foundation, which will now be subordinated to the Cabinet of Ministers. It is planned to create regional divisions of the fund, which will allow us to quickly respond to the situation on the ground.

400 billion soums were allocated for the implementation of the fund's activities in 2024. Additional funding will be provided at the expense of 25 percent of the proceeds from fines recorded by means of photo and video recording of traffic violations. These funds will be used to eliminate hazardous areas, including the installation of road fences, traffic lights, signs and other elements of traffic management.

The formation of a transparent fund management system will be one of the priorities. It will include heads of regional road safety departments and road services, as well as representatives of the public.

Road safety issues are under special control of the country's leadership. According to official data, more than 9,300 road accidents were registered in Uzbekistan in 2024. As a result of accidents, about 9,000 people were injured, the death toll exceeded 2,200.

The largest number of road accidents was recorded in the Samarkand, Tashkent and Ferghana regions — regions with high population density and transport activity.

The initiative to create the national program "Safe Road" reflects a strategic approach to the formation of a sustainable transport infrastructure, where the preservation of life and health of citizens becomes a key priority.
