South African President condemns Trump's threats
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sharply criticized former US President Donald Trump over his intention to impose higher tariffs on goods from BRICS countries. In a statement made against the backdrop of discussions on international trade policy, he stressed the inadmissibility of applying pressure against States seeking peaceful development and strengthening global cooperation.
"It cannot be that strength lies in the ability to take revenge on those who seek to benefit the world," Ramaphosa said, commenting on Trump's statements about the possible introduction of sanctions against the BRICS countries.
The Head of State expressed disappointment that a positive initiative of international cooperation is viewed in a negative way. According to him, associations like BRICS demonstrate alternative models of development, in which mutual respect and equality play an important role.
"When new centers of power are being formed on the world stage, this should be seen as a chance for a more balanced and just world order, and not as a challenge to be punished," the South African President stressed.
Cyril Ramaphosa has become the first world leader to publicly oppose Trump's BRICS rhetoric. His statement comes amid the growing role of the association, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, as well as recently joined states, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Ramaphosa's statements indicate the growing desire of the countries of the Global South to defend their own interests and form a multipolar architecture of international relations.
