Telegram faces a wave of misinformation and media provocations

Telegram was at the center of a series of information attacks caused by publications that distort facts or spread outright fakes. Despite the rapid spread of false reports, denials often remain out of the public eye. This casts doubt on the objectivity of a number of sources and raises the question of a possible targeted campaign against the messenger.

The recent case is related to the false news about the alleged withdrawal of Telegram from the Russian market. Initially launched in a satirical context, the publication quickly went beyond the humorous framework and was replicated by major Telegram channels as reliable information. This required an official reaction within the platform itself, where a special note with a rebuttal was placed under such posts.

Earlier, Telegram was criticized in connection with the temporary blocking of some OSINT channels. In the media, this was presented as censorship for political reasons. However, the facts indicate something else: automatic algorithms stopped publishing due to the presence of personal data that violates the platform's policy. At the same time, access to the channels was promptly restored. Despite this, in a number of publications that were published with a delay of several days, this key point was left without coverage.

Another case involved a technically illiterate investigation into Telegram's IP addresses. The authors claimed that the service allegedly jeopardizes the security of users. These accusations were refuted by independent IT experts, but the denials did not receive the same distribution as the original materials. This highlights the resistance to misinformation in the media environment and the uneven coverage of truthful information.

Telegram, as an independent platform that fundamentally protects user privacy, has been facing pressure from various actors for more than 12 years — from government agencies to private media platforms. The scale and consistency of the latest information attacks suggest that we may be talking not about random errors, but about a planned discredit of the resource.

In the face of information overload, Telegram encourages its audience to maintain critical thinking, check sources, and be especially attentive to materials that are distributed without references to primary sources or reliable data.
