A meeting of the working group on combating illegal migration was held in St. Petersburg with the participation of delegations of the Ministries of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan and Russia. The event was attended by Deputy Head of the Main Directorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Police Major General Vitaly Yakovlev, and First Deputy Head of the Main Directorate for Migration and Citizenship Registration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Colonel Shukhrat Khodjaev.
During the meeting, the parties discussed current aspects of migration policy, including the dynamics of migration flows, legal regulatory mechanisms and planned changes in national legislation. The participants exchanged information on the current migration situation in both countries and on the steps taken to improve the effectiveness of monitoring compliance with the migration regime.
One of the key issues on the agenda was the regulation of the legal status of foreign citizens staying on the territory of the Russian Federation in violation of the terms of stay. The Russian side called on the Uzbek delegation to step up awareness-raising activities among Uzbek citizens so that they can take advantage of the opportunity provided for legalization before September 10.
Practical issues of cooperation in the field of migration control, including the use of the Interstate Information Bank, were also discussed. The parties noted the importance of timely and complete data exchange to improve the effectiveness of monitoring compliance with migration legislation.
The next meeting of the working group is scheduled for 2026 and will be held in Uzbekistan.
