Xiaomi YU7: a new electric crossover from the team of the former BMW designer, ready to enter the market

Xiaomi has completed preparations for the launch of its second mass — produced electric car, the YU7. According to information from production, thousands of ready-made copies are already on the territory of the company's factory in Yizhuang, Beijing. Mass deliveries are expected to start in July. The new model is designed to compete with the Tesla Model Y in the segment of affordable electric crossovers.

The YU7 was designed by the same team that created the SU7 sedan, led by former BMW designer Tianyuan Li. The electric car has a length of about 4.8 meters and is built on the Modena platform, shared with the SU7. The architecture and digital ecosystem are also similar. The crossover features increased ground clearance and a redesigned roof line, which provides more overhead space for rear-row passengers.

The power plant includes two configuration options. The basic version is equipped with a 145 kW front electric motor and a 220 kW rear electric motor, which gives a total of 365 kW (489 hp). In the top-end version, the front engine produces 220 kW, and the rear-285 kW. The total power output is 508 kW (681 hp). The car supports an 800-volt architecture, which ensures high charging speed. Batteries are supplied by China's largest manufacturers — BYD and CATL.

The YU7 infotainment system runs on HyperOS with support for the Snapdragon 8295 chip. The central place in the cabin is occupied by a 16.1-inch screen. For driver assistance systems, the Nvidia Drive Orin chip is used, and the Xiaomi Pilot Pro complex provides L2+level autonomous driving capabilities. The electric vehicle is equipped with lidars, ultrasonic sensors and all-round cameras for enhanced maneuvering and parking support.

The price of the YU7 is expected to be lower than that of the SU7, which will allow the model to successfully compete with the Tesla Model Y in key markets. The company will reveal more details about prices and trim levels at the official launch of sales.
