Russia to write off $297 million in electricity debt to Tajikistan

Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev and Tajik Energy and Water Resources Minister Daler Juma signed an agreement on gradual cancellation of Tajikistan's debt to the Russian-Tajik Sangtuda HPP-1 enterprise. The amount of debt is 25.3 billion rubles (about 297 million US dollars). Full cancellation of the debt is planned until 2034 inclusive. This information is confirmed by the protocol approved by the Lower house of the Tajik Parliament on June 16.

Against the background of the agreement on debt cancellation, issues of modernization and development of energy infrastructure are being discussed. According to the State Duma of the Russian Federation, more than 40 trillion rubles will be needed to upgrade and develop electric networks in Russia until 2042.

Within the framework of Russia's energy policy, stages of gradual increase in electricity tariffs are envisaged. Starting from July 1, 2025, tariffs will be increased by 12.6%, starting from July 1, 2026 — by another 9.3%, starting from July 1, 2027-by 6.9 %, and starting from July 1, 2028-by 4.9 %. These measures are aimed at ensuring sustainable financing for the modernization of the grid complex, the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia reported.
