Lenovo and Intel unveil the world's first mass-produced laptop with a collapsible screen

Lenovo, with the participation of Intel, has released the first production laptop with folding display technology — the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable. The device is equipped with a screen that, when folded, resembles a standard laptop, but is able to unfold vertically. As a result, the display diagonal increases from 14 to 16.7 inches. This changes the aspect ratio — the screen is shaped like two 16:9 displays located on top of each other.

The flexible screen design took two years to develop. In the process, engineers focused on thermal mechanics, power management, and the integration of two miniature motors into a 19.9 mm thick chassis. According to the manufacturer, the hinge of the device is designed for at least 30,000 cycles of opening and closing the lid, and the screen mechanism itself can withstand about 20,000 vertical turns.

Intel was responsible for implementing key technology solutions. In particular, the company has developed a power management and thermal adjustment system based on the dynamic thermal adjustment tool in Intel Core Ultra chips. Intel specialists, together with Lenovo, adapted these technologies to monitor the temperature and power consumption of the device. For the first time in the industry, Intel's graphics driver software has been optimized to ensure smooth and stable screen unfolding.

The model is built on the Intel Core Ultra 7 platform, comes with up to 32 GB of RAM and a solid-state drive with a capacity of up to 1 TB. The device supports Wi-Fi 7, is equipped with Thunderbolt 4 ports. The starting price of the laptop is $ 3,500.
