Microsoft and Asus Unveil the First ROG Xbox Ally Handheld Console — But It's Not Really Xbox

At a recent presentation, Microsoft announced a device that is called the first portable Xbox game console. However, formally this is not Xbox in the usual sense. The novelty was created in collaboration with Asus and was named ROG Xbox Ally. In fact, this is a portable game console under the Asus brand with external and software design from Microsoft.

The console will be presented in two versions — ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The main difference between them is in computing capabilities. The older model received AMD's latest Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme APU, built on the Zen 5 architecture, with eight cores and integrated RDNA 3.5 graphics, making it one of the most powerful platforms in the class. It also has a neuroprocessor focused on working with artificial intelligence. The more affordable version runs on the Ryzen Z2 A chip — a quad-core solution with RDNA 2 graphics, technically close to what is used in the Steam Deck. The gap between the two processors is huge in both architecture and capabilities.

The differences between the versions also affected other parameters. The younger model is equipped with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD, while the older one offers 24 GB and a 1 TB drive. Also, the more advanced console has a larger battery — 80 Wh against 60 Wh for the younger one, as well as a USB4 port with Thunderbolt 4 support. However, the basic version wins in weight: 670 grams against 715.

Both versions received a 7-inch display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a special build of Windows 11, adapted to the gaming environment. The system comes pre-installed with a proprietary Xbox app, as well as support for cloud gaming-an element that directly connects ROG Xbox Ally to the Microsoft ecosystem.

Official prices have not yet been revealed. However, judging by the characteristics and previous experience with the ROG Ally line, we can assume that the consoles will be far from budget-friendly. The older model is likely to surpass the price of even the Xbox Series X, and the younger one will be relevant only if there is a noticeable difference in cost. Without this, its market positioning may be called into question.

ROG Xbox Ally is, first of all, a step towards expanding the Xbox ecosystem and Windows gaming. The device combines the hardware base of Asus with the software and cloud infrastructure of Microsoft, offering the user a hybrid where console and PC gaming converge in one package.
