Toyota is preparing an updated Harrier
Toyota has announced plans for a complete upgrade of its premium Harrier crossover, which will hit the market in 2027. The model will receive a radically redesigned design, a new hybrid powertrain and will be positioned as the Japanese auto giant's answer to the growing segment of premium coupes and crossovers.
According to the Japanese publication BestCarWeb, the new Harrier will replace the current version introduced in 2020, completing the six-year life cycle of the current generation. Initially, the debut was planned for 2026, but against the background of delays in the certification of a number of Toyota models (including the Crown Estate, postponed from 2023 to 2025), the dates were adjusted.
New design and compartment format
Harrier 2027 will get an expressive look in the style of a coupe-crossover, which will be the most noticeable difference from the previous generation. According to preliminary data, the dimensions of the model will be 4750 x 1860 x 1550 mm, and the wheelbase will increase to 2270 mm, which will provide improved comfort for rear passengers and more stable handling.
New engine and hybrid system
The crossover will be powered by a new 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine specifically designed for hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems. The combined power of the hybrid unit will be about 180 hp, while the emphasis will be placed on increased fuel efficiency and reduced noise compared to current solutions.
The model will be built on the TNGA-K platform, similar to that used in the new Toyota RAV4, but the Harrier will be noticeably larger and aimed at a more premium audience. For comparison, the RAV4 measures 4620 x 1880 x 1680 mm with a wheelbase of 2690 mm.
Competition in the premium segment
The updated Harrier is positioned as a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and BMW X4 models, which have already proven themselves in the coupe-SUV segment. Toyota expects that the combination of new design, technology and hybrid efficiency will allow Harrier to strengthen its position in the premium class in global markets, including Japan, China and other Asian countries.
The official debut of the model is expected in the second half of 2027. Detailed technical specifications, complete sets and estimated prices will be presented closer to the release date.
