Uzbekistan upgrades Tashkent's railway network: implementation of measures to eliminate infrastructure bottlenecks has begun

On May 28, 2025, the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan announced the launch of a large-scale project to modernize the railway infrastructure in Tashkent. The package of measures is aimed at eliminating the so-called "bottlenecks" in the capital's transport system, which limit capacity and negatively affect the urban environment.

One of the key elements of the project will be the relocation of a number of freight railway stations outside the city. According to experts, this will relieve the internal railway network of Tashkent, reduce the level of transport congestion and free up valuable sections of urban territory for other purposes, including the development of public transport and landscaping.

As part of the project, it is also planned to build a bypass railway line that will allow transit flows to bypass the central districts of the capital. This solution will not only reduce train travel time, but also significantly reduce noise and vibration in densely populated areas of the city.

Special attention will be paid to improving the quality of railway service. In particular, it is planned to modernize existing facilities, introduce digital solutions in transportation management, update rolling stock and develop logistics hubs.

The measures are being implemented within the framework of a broad state program for the development of transport infrastructure, designed for the medium term. The goal of the program is to increase the efficiency of all types of transportation, strengthen ties between regions, improve urban mobility and minimize the negative impact of transport on the environment.

It is expected that the modernization of the Tashkent railway system will be an important step towards creating a sustainable, modern and environmentally friendly transport infrastructure in the capital. The project is also seen as part of efforts to integrate Uzbekistan into regional and international logistics corridors, including cross-border freight and passenger transport routes.
