National Research Nuclear University
Branch of the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI" in Tashkent announced the launch of a new training area — "Computer Science and Engineering". Now the number of bachelor's programs at the university has increased to six.
According to Shavkat Abdukamilov, Executive Director of the MEPhI TF, the decision to introduce the IT direction was the result of a detailed analysis of the labor market needs and strategic tasks for digitalization of the Uzbek economy.
"Uzbekistan is now becoming a point of attraction for IT specialists: international companies are moving here, the startup market is developing. We see a high demand for specialists with fundamental training, and our university intends to occupy its niche in training personnel who can work not only in the commercial sector, but also in strategically important areas — nuclear energy, cybersecurity and management of complex technological processes.", - said Abdukamilov.
MEPhI Research Center was founded in 2018 and has established itself as a leading training center for specialists in the energy industry. Currently, the university has about 250 students in the fields of "Nuclear Energy and Thermal Physics", "Nuclear Physics and Technology", "Heat and Power Engineering" and "Electric Power and Electrical Engineering". In 2023, the first graduation of bachelors took place, a significant part of which continued their studies in the master's program of leading universities in the world.
Since the first graduation, about 50 students have entered the master's program at the main university of MEPhI in Moscow, as well as leading technical universities in France, Italy, Hungary, South Korea and China. According to the university, every year almost half of graduates continue their studies, which confirms the high level of training in the branch.
The launch of a new IT direction was made possible thanks to partnership with leading Russian and international companies. Negotiations are underway with major players in the field of digital technologies on internship opportunities and practical courses for students.
"MEPhI is traditionally known for its high level of mathematics and physics teaching, which gives our graduates an important advantage. They will be able not only to work in the field of programming, but also to engage in complex technological developments in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital simulations.", - added Abdukamilov.
One of the key elements of the program will be an interdisciplinary approach. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the development of unmanned systems, the creation of digital twins of technological processes and the introduction of artificial intelligence in the management of complex engineering objects.
The branch already has a VR laboratory that allows simulating the operation of a nuclear reactor in a digital environment. In addition, students will be able to work on a digital prototype of a reactor control panel used to train nuclear power plant operators.
In addition to the IT direction, the branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in Tashkent opens the program "Medical Physics: nuclear Medicine". This promising area is focused on training specialists in the field of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Graduates of the program will receive competencies in radiation medicine, nuclear diagnostics and radiation therapy. In the future, they will be able to work in clinics, scientific laboratories, and medical technology companies.
It is planned that in 2025, 50 students will be recruited in each of the new directions on a contract basis.
Admission to the Computer Science and Engineering and Nuclear Medicine programs will start in 2025. As part of the admission campaign, open lectures, presentations and meetings with industry representatives will be organized so that applicants can get acquainted with the prospects of training and career growth.
