At the exhibition MWC 2025 Barcelona-based company Xiaomi demonstrated a concept modular smartphone. The technology may allow you to get rid of protruding camera blockswhich have become standard in modern devices.
Magnetic mount and interchangeable lenses
The prototype is based on Xiaomi 15 and equipped with with a magnetic mount on the back panel. This allows you to connect to the device connect removable lenseswhich are fixed with magnets and two contact points.
Journalist Wired I tested the concept and used the lens Xiaomi 35mm f/1.4 with a 100-megapixel sensor Light Fusion X Type 4/3. This sensor is significantly larger than those used in modern smartphones.
High-speed data exchange and AI capabilities
After connecting the lens in the app "Camera" you can now switch to a removable module. Data transfer between the lens and the smartphone performed at the speed of up to 10 Gbit / s, which is enough for a camera with support to work artificial intelligence.
The future of modular smartphones
At the moment Xiaomi does not disclose the release date and cost of the device, since this is still just a concept.
Industry history shows that modular smartphones we've failed more than once - from projects Google, LG, Motorola until recent attempts HMD. However, the submitted prototype it looks well thought out, and the concept itself has great potential.
