Uzbekistan intends to increase the share of "green" energy in total generation to more than 50% by 2030. This was announced during a meeting held by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, dedicated to the current work in the field of nuclear energy and promising tasks of the energy sector.
According to the press service of the head of state, the President was informed about the achievements in the field of nuclear energy and plans for further development. To meet the growing needs of the population and various sectors of the economy, Uzbekistan actively uses all available energy sources.
In recent years, the country has put into operation about 4 gigawatts of alternative energy capacity, which has increased the share of "green" energy to 16%. In the next five years, it is planned to launch additional capacities of renewable energy sources (RES) for 25 gigawatts. This will make it possible to achieve the production of "green" energy at the level of 64 billion kilowatt-hours, which will be an important step towards achieving the target of more than 50% in the generation structure by 2030.
The rapid development of digital technologies, electric vehicles, electronics, artificial intelligence and mining increases the demand for energy resources. In the context of the global energy transition, many countries are reducing their dependence on traditional fossil sources, giving priority to renewable energy, and looking for ways to improve energy efficiency. Even today, alternative sources account for 42% of global generation.
Along with the development of renewable energy, Uzbekistan relies on nuclear power as a reliable source for creating a long-term energy base. Currently, 417 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 375 gigawatts are in operation in the world, and construction of new nuclear power plants continues. Uzbekistan, which has its own uranium reserves, also plans to introduce modern nuclear technologies. In particular, a project for the construction of low-power reactors has been developed.
On December 5, 2024, an international conference dedicated to the use of atomic energy was held in Samarkand. During the event, the prospects for the development of the industry, the introduction of innovations and international cooperation were discussed.
At the meeting, Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed to step up training of qualified specialists for future nuclear facilities, paying special attention to safety issues in accordance with the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
It is noted that the integration of renewable and nuclear energy sources will increase the competitiveness of the Uzbek economy and create a solid foundation for sustainable long-term growth.
