International consortium to build small nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan

An international consortium is planned to be created for the construction of a small nuclear power plant (NPP) in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan. This was announced by Azim Akhmedkhadzhayev, director of the Uzatom agency, in an interview with local television.

"The President of Uzbekistan emphasized that this project should have an international character with the involvement of various international structures," Akhmedkhadzhayev stressed.

According to the plans, technologies from different countries will be used in the construction of the nuclear power plant. Russian nuclear technologies will form the basis, while non-nuclear components will be supplied from China, and software and hardware complexes will be supplied from Europe. This approach will allow us to integrate the world's leading developments and increase the reliability of the future station.

"We will use non-standard solutions, such as dry cooling towers made in Hungary or China. This will significantly reduce water consumption at the power plant, " said the head of Uzatom .

An important area of the project will be the training of qualified specialists. Uzatom has developed a joint program with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aimed at training personnel and ensuring a high level of safety in the implementation of nuclear projects in the country.

Recall that in May 2024, Uzbekistan and Russia agreed to build a small nuclear power plant using Russian technologies. However, the project raises some concerns in Uzbek society, since such technologies are still considered experimental and have not been sufficiently tested in real conditions.

The country's authorities assure that special attention will be paid to safety issues, taking into account the best international practices and recommendations of the IAEA. The creation of an international consortium is designed to build confidence in the project and ensure its compliance with high standards in the field of nuclear energy.
